Signings: Rachunek, Janssen

I got word of both of these articles through HFBoards - the premier message board for hockey (in my opinion).

First, the familiar one: Cam Janssen has re-signed with the New Jersey Devils. The information for Janssen on the NHLPA website has an updated compensation value for the upcoming season. I take that to mean the Devils signed him for $550,000. Well, he is the team's de facto enforcer; though I'd wish he'd hit more and fight a lot less. For that price, though I can't complain too loudly. Expect another season of fourth line duty for Cammer the Hammer.

Second, the not quite so familiar one: Quebec sports site RDS is reporting that Karel Rachunek has signed with the Devils for $1.5 million for next season. Rachunek is a 27 year old (soon to be 28) defenseman who played for the Rangers last season, scoring 6 goals and 20 assists in 66 games with 4 assists in the playoffs. With the Rangers, he averaged 19:23 on the ice - the fourth highest among Rangers defensemen. Repeat after me: Rachunek is not Rafalski's replacement. If anything, I think he's Brad Lukowich's replacement. He's not the quickest guy on the ice, but he's dependable enough in his own end. In a depth role or a #4 spot, I got no problems with Rachunek. Who knows, he may improve a little playing on a team that has a semblance of a clue on how to defend. A good depth signing, in my opinion.

We just took Zubrus for 6 years, as well. I'm okay with that.

How close is Bergfors to being ready to contribute? Could they possibly bring him up this season, or is Zubrus likely our top Center now?

What about Corrente? I know he's young, but he was touted, and I haven't heard much about him to this point.

Thanks for the Zubrus news!

Bergfors is at a crossroads. As of now, he's going back to Sweden. Though I imagine the Devils will try to convince him to stay in North America to help his development. All the same, Bergfors would need a strong training camp to make the team at this point.

Corrente looked really good at camp last season, but he didn't have a good season in junior with off-ice troubles and on-ice decision making hurting him. His upside is still very high, so I think a better season in junior would help him a lot. I don't see him making the Devils until after next season, to be honest.

No problem, John.

I've been a Devils fan since the exact same season you've been. Funny, no?

I live in Washington now, and I always thought that Zubrus was a solid guy. He's got the same point totals Gomez had, essentially, and for what appears to be a bargain price. I'd rather have Gomez, but I'm glad we at least got Zubrus, and didn't go empty handed.

I had high hopes for Bergfors at least making the squad by now, but it sounds like that's a long shot.

I also knew Corrente probably needed more time, but things were looking grim, so I thought I'd ask.

Thanks for the info.

Do you see Lou making a trade at this point? He said he would, if he couldn't address our needs via free agency. I think Zubrus fits the bill, but does Martin really take over for Rafalski? And, if the Rachunek signing is true still, he's not a Top 4 guy for us, is he? Wouldn't we still need a top defencemen during this offseason?

I wish Souray played ANY kind of defence, so we could just ink him for the time being!
